Over a duration of six weeks, I engaged in Iterate UX's Research Challenge, during which I worked collaboratively with team members, stakeholders, and a senior UX Researcher to pinpoint critical issues pertaining to the "This Active Life" prototype.

Survey

We administered a comprehensive 27-question online survey encompassing subjects ranging from physical activities to accountability.

The objective of this survey was to gain insights into individuals' workout preferences, obstacles, and motivations.

From the survey we were able to gain the following insights:

Group Workout
Don't consistently exercise in a group setting
Messaging
Would use an app to find people with similar workout preferences
Tracking
Feel that working out with others is challenging due to schedule conflicts.

Additional finding is provided down below

Competitive Analysis

We chose three fitness apps to evaluate their primary features and compiled a list of the advantages and disadvantages associated with each of them.

Features: Accountability Partner Finder

  • Enjifit was created with the intention of inspiring individuals to engage in exercise by connecting them with like-minded individuals who share similar interests and fitness goals.

Pros

  • Capable of locating a workout partner who shares similar fitness objectives and interests.
  • The application enables you to add friends and engage in conversations with them.
  • You have the ability to monitor your workouts and establish reminders for them.

Cons

  • It is not possible to filter partners according to their location or skill level.
  • The app offers a selection of over 40 activities to choose from; however, you need to scroll through them, as there is no search functionality available.
  • The app permits you to create a profile, but it lacks customization options and does not enable you to specify your skill levels for various activities.

Feature: Accountability Partner Finder

  • Matches are determined by the user's profile settings, including their favorite activities, proximity to other users, and preferred gender.
  • Users have the option to communicate with potential accountability partners through messaging before arranging to meet them in person.

Pros

  • Users have the flexibility to customize their distance and gender preferences.
  • Users have the option to send a message to individuals before meeting them in person.

Cons

  • Unfortunately, there is no option to adjust the activity level.
  • The app does not display the skill levels of potential accountability partners.

Features: Finding a Challenge

  • Users have the opportunity to take part in virtual group challenges.
  • Users can receive monetary rewards and may incur penalties for each challenge they engage in.
  • Users would be required to post a daily video of themselves performing the challenge.

Pros

  • Able to find a workout partner that has the similar fitness goals and interests
  • The app allows you to add friends and chat with them.
  • You can keep track of work-out and set reminders for them.

Cons

  • Can’t filter partners based on location or skill level
  • The has 40+ activities to choose from but you have to scroll and can’t search
  • The apps allows you to create a profile but isn’t customizable and doesn’t allow you to put your skill levels for activities

Usability Testing

Following each usability test, we conducted a brief 10-minute interview with participants to gain insights into how apps akin to "This Active Life" might affect their lifestyles, and to explore the barriers and motivations motivations that would encourage them to exercise more frequently.

Attendee Details
87% of users expressed a desire to have clear expectations when attending an event.
Sub Categories
62% of users indicated a preference for being able to choose specific activities.
Confirmation
75% of users expressed a desire for additional confirmation screens when finalizing a specific task.

User Interviews

We performed eight moderated remote usability tests to pinpoint the primary issues with the prototype and synthesized recurring categories of user feedback.

From these categories, we narrowed them down to the most common insights and pain points.

Connections
75% of individuals encountered difficulties in finding new connections after relocating to a new city.
Messaging
62% of users expressed a desire for a messaging feature to facilitate staying connected with other users.
Tracking
75% of users expressed their interest in setting daily reminders to assist them in achieving their fitness goals.

Persona

Drawing from our research, we crafted two personas, each representing individuals seeking accountability partners accountability partner but encountering distinct challenges.

Future Plans

Given additional time for this project, we would be eager to further focus on the following aspects:

  • Perform more comprehensive user interviews to gather in-depth insights.
  • Execute the implementation of our proposed solutions and carry out supplementary rounds of usability testing.
  • Initiate live beta testing and diary studies to gain a deeper understanding of how users regularly interact with the app and the impact it has on their lifestyles.

Lessons Learned

Teamwork. Collaborating with other UX designers for the first time was an enjoyable and enriching experience.

Learning new tools. We were able to learn new tools and techniques from each other's varied UX experiences.

Working with participants. We gained valuable experience in effectively recruiting and scheduling participants, adapting to unforeseen time changes, and handling technical difficulties during testing sessions.

A Roadmap. We established a well-defined plan with a clear timeline and objectives, ensuring that all team members were aligned and able to complete their respective tasks effectively.
